Okayy... i decided a while ago to spill out write ups and I wanna call them-"vanity cards"... not because I sat in the corner of my cozy room in NH and strung a few nerve circuits in my mind to light the proverbial bulb and coin that name, but because one of the writers I deeply respect from his works gives out "vanity cards". You might know him as Chuck lorre. (pronounced "lorre" or "lor-re" depending on if you've met him or not.. and yeah on if you are angel black or dammy white😊).
Writing vanity Card #1, all I could think of was my "great" school and soon to be alma mater -bowen university, and how religion is a giant centralist in my pursuit of an unwanted B.sc and a craved MBBS.
Now I imagine the founding fathers of this (my) university coming together and thinking; oh yeah let's gather our own mix of young adults and feed them with the seeds of eccentric religion, let's barricade their exposure with biblical jurisdictions hoping that after four short years they are modeled for life.
But no I don't believe this university models us for life, if life is exactly like the bowen campus, - couple curfew by 8, female skirt below the knee, and male beard beneath the skin, then sure we are gold-ready for life. But its obvious that isn't how life is... herego, life here isn't a model, neither does it model me for the true life beyond these barricades.
Now about the centralism of religion in bowen land, having been coerced into wearing this cloak of religion for a whole semester solely for the personal aim of experimentation, I can state the following facts.
-You get unprecedented fame from the whole "chapel business". If you've got nothing else to offer our society (bowen land) that's a pretty easy way to get famous.
-You get to meet people that have been led to try and curb your chain of thought and limit your depth of thought to the easy and convenient answers of religion.
-You meet people who have left the distinction of an individual self for a general personality in which they all have superficial smiles and nicety because a particular doctrine dictates so.
-You meet people who hug you with an external cloak of acceptance but internally subjects you to a strong condemnation by the highly judgemental jury hidden within them from the external world by the simple fact that tympanic membranes are not designed to beat to the background noise of mind thoughts, or distant noise of spoken words that they verbalize in their room while you are in your hostel relishing the opportunity provided by an election into a coveted post.
-You meet non practical people, people who forget reality and exalt feigned spirituality, forgetting to contribute to their society, my society in ways beyond reading the bible and giving redundant lectures on chapters and verses read.
I am a 400l student in this "going to be great someday" university and I can count the intellectuals I've met by my hand fingers without running out of fingers to count, but the ones who scream "I am spiritual and of chapel"... ohhh they are inexhaustible in their numbers... and unfortunately, in my opinion, they are the ones that least belong in an academic environment, and please don't misunderstand me, they do belong here, but I believe that, in an institution whose motto reads "excellence and godliness" (not "godliness and excellence ") intellectuals come first, brilliant minds find home and creatively inclined individual should find refuge from the quick criticism offered by this sect.
In my opinion, if Bowen is ever going to reach a world standard, these people have to take a step aside and allow individuals who embody the truth of the universality of a university education, coupled with a non religious faith in a "school specified God" thrive. (I mean you can't go around screaming "Allah is great" here, or "i am a strong Buddhist", or can you? ).
I love this school, I love watching it grow and most importantly I believe in its potential. We are bowen; I am bowen.
